Young Professionals Program and Events

The Young Professionals Program matches OSA's younger members with career-building volunteer opportunities that align with their areas of technical interest. All members under 40 years of age are eligible for the program.

We are pleased to announce the following Young Professional opportunities and events at FiO'10!

Young Professionals Bloggers

Watch for OSA's own Young Professional Bloggers reporting on events and their own experiences at FiO! Blogs and tweets will be shared via the Conference Twitter stream #FiO10 and on the FiO Social Media Hub.

VIP Industry Leaders Networking Event: Connecting OSA Corporate Members and Young Professionals

Tuesday, October 26, 8:00 a.m.– 9:30 a.m. - Free of Charge
Grand Ballroom E & F, Hyatt Regency Rochester

Join OSA Corporate Members for an event that puts Young Professionals in contact with highly successful OSA members. After an informal networking session, each participant will have the opportunity for a brief visit with each corporate member to discuss careers, industry trends or any other topic. Corporate member participants include companies such as CVI Melles Griot and Toptica.

Space is limited. Members of OSA's Young Professionals program will be given registration priority, but any recent graduate is welcome to RSVP.

Students and Young Professionals Forum on Public Policy

Tuesday, October 26, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m.
Carlson and Douglass Rooms, Radisson Hotel Rochester Riverside

This forum on Public Policy will discuss all of the ways young professionals and students can get involved with Public Policy events here at OSA. Hear from other OSA members who are actively involved in public policy and find out about their experiences and why it’s so important for all scientists to engage in public policy. Information will also be provided on OSA’s Congressional Fellowships which allows scientists to work on the Hill in a congressional office for 1 year. There will also be a question and answer session with the panelists afterwards. Whether you’re already involved in public policy activities or interested in ways that you could be, this forum will prove to be invaluable.

Minorities and Women in OSA (MWOSA) Tea

Student Activities

The Frontiers in Optics/Laser Science Conference is especially valuable for student attendees; it’s the event where many deliver their first presentations and make career-long professional contacts. We urge you to take full advantage of the wide array of student programming that is available to you!

Free Short Courses for Students!

Students who are members of one of the sponsoring organizations may register for free for Short Courses not yet at capacity. Visit the registration desk to see which courses are still available. To achieve the full value of attending a Short Course, students are strongly encouraged to pre-purchase Short Course Notes for $15 USD at the time that they register. Short Course Notes are a valuable take-home benefit of attending a course, and these notes will be available only to attendees of the course.

There is a limited supply of Short Course Notes available for purchase, and students must pick up the notes on-site. (Paid attendees automatically receive one copy of the notes.)

Please note that Student Leadership Conference attendees cannot attend short courses.

Annual OSA Student Chapter Leadership Conference

The invitation-only Student Leadership Conference brings together OSA Student Chapter leaders from around the globe to network, hear distinguished speakers, present posters and learn more about successful chapter management and the popular International OSA Network of Students (IONS). In addition, Dr. John Koshel, Senior Optical Engineer, Photon Engineering, LLC; Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona; OSA Board of Meetings Committee Member will present “The Rewards of Getting Involved with OSA Meetings.”

OSA/SPS Student Member Welcome Reception

"Feeding Young Minds" Student Chapter Competition

This event provides OSA Student Chapters with the opportunity to showcase their best education lesson plan/demonstration and to compete for a prize of $500 USD. OSA Student Chapters should contact April Zack at azack@osa.org for more information.

OSA Student Chapters can enter by completing the entry form. Direct questions to April Zack at azack@osa.org.
